Astana, Kazakhstan – The prestigious ICPC 2024 World Finals has once again witnessed stellar performances from Chinese university teams, solidifying their place among the best problem solvers in the world. This year’s competition, held on September 19, 2024, at the Astana EXPO, featured teams from top universities worldwide competing to solve 12 complex problems within a grueling 5-hour window.
Outshining the fierce competition, Peking University’s (Naive Birds) emerged as the World Champion, showcasing the brilliance and ingenuity of their team consisting of Anyi Xu, Weicheng Wang, and Xiangwen Wang. The team solved an incredible 9 problems with a penalty score of 935, taking home the coveted title as well as the Asia East Champion crown, with a prize of $16,200.
China’s presence at the top didn’t stop there. Tsinghua University, represented by the team All the Way North (students Hangrui Zhou, Shaoxuan Tang, and Tingjiang Xu), secured 3rd place with an equally impressive 9 problems solved, dragging closely behind Russia’s Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology team, who finished in 2nd place.
Notably, China had four teams ranked in the Top 10, with Beijing Jiaotong University placing 7th and Zhejiang University landing in 10th place. These results are a testament to China’s growing dominance in the field of competitive programming and its ability to cultivate world-class talent capable of tackling the toughest computational challenges.
In the broader Asia Pacific region, Japan’s Tokyo Institute of Technology claimed 4th place and the title of Asia Pacific Champion, while KAIST from South Korea took the 5th spot, showing strong performances from across Asia.
This year’s ICPC saw incredible participation from universities worldwide, demonstrating the importance of computational thinking and programming skills in an increasingly tech-driven world. Chinese universities, in particular, have made a significant mark on the global stage, proving their educational institutions are hubs for fostering cutting-edge problem-solving abilities.
As these teams return to their campuses, their success is sure to inspire the next generation of programmers and innovators. Congratulations to all the participating teams, and especially to Peking University for their extraordinary victory!
